1050 Students reached
One of our biggest event was the Community Police Advisory Board Meeting held at Clinton. This is an event that drew in more than 200 people including students, parents and community members. The weeks leading up to the event we promoted and educated students on community advocacy and the need to voice concerns to government and local agencies. We promoted our event at our school Clinton middle school (725 students) as well as at neighboring elementary schools and high schools including: Animo Jackie Robinson High school, Trinity Elementary, Lizarraga Elementary and Dolores Huerta Elementary School. We presented at several Coffee with the Principal and passed out flyers before and after school the weeks leading up to the event. We believe it was this level of dedication promoting the event that resulted in such a high turn out. The event was held on a Thursday evening (5-7pm) and we had over 200 individuals attend.
19+ grocery food boxes/grocery gift card Donations
South LA is disproportionately predominately a Latino and black community that is affected by high rates of poverty and unemployment, as well as suffering from inadequate fresh food options. As Covid-19 began affecting the world we started seeing the direct impact it was having on our community, and all the previously existing injustices only became that much more prominent. When we switched to virtual community efforts it only made sense for us to focus on our community's immediate needs which at present time is access to food. We are proud that we were able to partner with many local organizations in order to provide fresh food grocery boxes. Additionally, we also raffled off grocery gift cards. In total after taking our efforts virtual we raffled off 8 gift cards to Clinton students/families and community members as well as gave out over 10 grocery boxes. This was all due to our budget as well as leveraging networks and receiving donations!
Community Impact
We are proud of both our efforts pre
Covid-19 and post Covid-19. Our CPAB meeting drew over 200 people which is a huge success for an event held on a weekday at night! The event encouraged many to continue to attend community events to voice their concerns and become informed on local resources. Additionally, once we transitioned to focusing on food access for our community we outreached to several community organizations and schools to promote our weekly raffles. In addition to our raffles we posted local resources to assist our community members stay up to date with resources available to them. We can't take full credit but we feel we played a small part in helping our community members stay informed on resources during this challenging time!
